Dr Charlotte Lawson
Charlotte's role includes development of new programmes at both undergraduate and postgraduate level. She also develops new partnerships and collaborations as well as oversight of student recruitment onto both undergraduate and postgraduate courses within the School. Charlotte also teaches and supervise student research projects, whilst continuing her own research.
Charlotte's current research focuses on intercellular communication. In particular, it focuses on the factors that play a role in leukocyte – endothelial interactions in vascular inflammation and cardiometabolic disease. She has a special interest in the role of extracellular vesicles (EV) in particular their potential as biomarkers of inflammation in peripheral biofluids (plasma, serum, urine, milk) and in the protective roles (anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant) of extracellular vesicles in the food we eat. This includes EVs derived from dairy products from large (cows) and small (sheep) ruminants, as well as the importance of plant-derived vesicles (PDV) to deliver the beneficial effects of traditional medicines such as mulberry, turmeric and ginger.
After graduating with BSc (Hons) Animal Science from the University of London, Charlotte undertook her PhD at The Kennedy Institute of Rheumatology (Imperial College, London). She then moved to the Transplant Immunology Research Group at Harefield Hospital (Imperial College, London) for a British Heart Foundation funded post-doctoral position, followed by a BHF funded Intermediate Fellowship. She moved on to a Lectureship at The Royal Veterinary College, University of London. She remained at the RVC until April 2024 as Associate Professor, taking on a number of senior academic roles including Directorship of the Biosciences Programme, and Study Abroad Co-ordinator, alongside research into human and veterinary cardiovascular disease. Charlotte is a founding member and the current President of the United Kingdom Society for Extracellular Vesicles (UKEV) and a member of MOVE, the European Extracellular Vesicle Research consortium.
